"Sleep and wakefulness, both of them, when immoderate constitute disease"

(Hippocrates)

Message from the President

Prof. Dr. Claudio Bassetti

Dear Readers,

we founded the European Sleep Foundation (ESF) in July 2017, with the conviction that there needed to be a concrete, high-value response at an international level to the growing needs in our society with respect to sleep and consciousness disorders. We have therefore launched the Master of Advanced Studies in Sleep, Consciousness and Related Disorders, affiliated with the University of Bern and the Università della Svizzera italiana. We have also untaken to extend our range of activities, including specialized scientific events called Think Tanks, exploring specific topics in-depth, as well as continuing education opportunities with the international Sleep Medicine Summer School and Sleep Science Winter School. In the more immediate future, we are planning a number of other major national and international initiatives.

In order to raise the public’s awareness of ESF and its activities and projects - as well as disseminate news in the field of research, innovation and patient care - we are launching our monthly newsletter. Through social communication channels, this newsletter will bring you information on the ESF and present topics of interest in the field of sleep and consciousness disorders.

I would especially like to thank our young and dynamic editorial board for their efforts in ensuring the regular publication of the newsletter, and, above all, wish you all a pleasant read.

World Sleep Day

19th March 2021

The European Sleep Foundation is pleased to promote the 2021 World Sleep Day on March 19th. ‘Regular Sleep, Healthy Future’ is the motto that accompanies the day, which traditionally takes place on the Friday before the March equinox and focuses on healthy sleep. Reason enough to take a closer look here. The COVID pandemic has almost completely changed medical services. This is also true for sleep medicine. However, the pandemic also shows that sleep disorders are of crucial importance. The limitation of sleep medical services had a huge impact on patients suffering from sleepiness, fatigue and limitations of daytime performance. Long-COVID-patients often suffer from unrefreshed sleep or sleeplessness. The pandemic also triggered new ideas in the diagnosis, treatment and follow up of sleep disorders.

Various short statements on topics like ‘Sleep and Brain Health’, ‘Sleep and Movement’, ‘Sleep and Breathing’, ‘Daytime sleepiness- time to wake up!’ and ‘Insomnia: Long-term consequences’ will give you an insight on the broad field of sleep medicine. In addition, a patient representative and a nurse will talk about their everyday sleep issues.

Stay awake and have a look at their statements.
